The OCU Pros Report Vol. 15                                                                          June 2011

Metaphysics and the OCUPros

This month we feature a flipbook made for the Ground Robotics Capabilities Conference (GRCC). “Play-Doh to Product in 2 years” describes how at GRCC 2009, AMREL led a session, in which key influencers demonstrated their ideas for OCUs with Legos, Play-Doh, and wooden blocks.  This session initiated a development process that within two years delivered new products, including interoperable modular OCUs and payload controllers.

Someone in our department misheard the title, and thought we said “From Plato to Product.”  A spirited debate ensued about whether the Greek philosopher’s descriptions of the relationship between ideal forms and the material world could be applied to our product development process.  The only conclusion we reached is that no matter how busy you are, you can still find creative ways of wasting your time.

Also, in this month’s newsletter, you’ll find a link to a very thorough Signal magazine article about armed UGVs.  In addition, we refer to AMREL’s corporate blog, for a discussion of P.W. Singer’s ideas about the effect of shrinking defense budgets on the acquisition of new robotic technologies.

Finally, “By the Numbers” returns.  It’s unusual, in that every fact and figure was derived from a single article by Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula (ret.), makes sense that the first Air Force deputy chief of staff for ISR would deliver information via a lot of numbers.

See you next month!

By The Numbers

800,000+    Predator logged hours

120,000+    Reaper logged hours

35,000+      Global Hawk logged hours

1,000,000+ Combat hours logged by airmen flying Predators, Reapers and Global Hawk aircraft

600             Hours of Predator ISR data that enabled airstrike targeting of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaida leader in Iraq

Minutes for length of above airstrike by F-16s

6                 Hours Global Hawk can maintain orbit at 4,000 mile range

10               Direct video downlinks for Gorgon Stare imaging system on MQ-9 Reaper

65              Total motion video views for Gorgon Stare imaging system on MQ-9 Reaper

100~           Approximate number of years ago, Italian monoplane dropped grenades on Turkish camp in Libya; first possible aerial bombing

All above information taken from The Unmanned Future by Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula (ret.), first Air Force deputy chief of staff for ISR (Armed Forces Journal).
